VoIP App Innovation Still Has a Long Way To Go

I read Andy Abramson's blog post on Brad Reed's Network World article on VoIP Apps Branching Out, and after reading Brad's article I have to say I found the example VoIP-Data mashups used in the article to be pretty uninspiring.  The real estate mashup sounded too complex to be of much use to many real-estate brokers.  The password change mashup sounded better, but there are other ways to automate password resets without the phone.

I agree with Andy, though, that we are going to see more and more of these VoIP-Data mashups and that eventually, quite a few of them will be useful.  Near term I think there are big opportunities in sales force automation and customer relationship management tools.

Of course, voice-data application integration has been around for decades, most notably in the call center industry.  VoIP hasn't really changed it.  The Internet and the tools that have grown up around the Internet are the real source of the new innovation in these applications.
